Laura Laine CLICK!!! Her style of illustraitions portray a really good idea of scale from what I was saying in the previous blog, particularly the ones below with the massive hair and really feeble and fragile tiny figure underneath. The faces are quite freaky too. I love the amount of detail in the drawings. Her drawings are amazing definitely worth a look.

Somarta Sung's CLICK!!!! collection below, I think it relates to the illustrations by Lang (above) through the proprtions, details and abnormal poses, stick figures, particularly these two images here;

These do also but not as much, I think the shadows because they create another dimension which is huge compared to the tiny body.

Opposite sides of the spectrum.
I really need to do some examples of my video even if it's photos...

taken from the film taxidermi
Can we combine ideas of both?

yeah we can...
eric il cane CLICK!!!!

I want to portray the ideology of something on such a great scale but that really is so fragile. Or something tiny that is made from something so strong/ heavy. I think that wouldn't be as impactful as the fragile large scale sense. Perhaps I can do this through clothing, hair, attatchments to the body/ buildings/ camera angles etc...!?

27

Blu CLICK!!!, Lucy and Bart (see previous blog for link) and Jenny Saville I think these images have a strong relationship.

Scale, texture, the unknown, creature, disfigured, abnormal

27

Abnormal, thought provoking, weird, making you look twice kinda style. I want my video to contain strange images which make you think, shock, amuse, scare and make people wanna look more. Portraying abnormalities... hmmm???

Lucy and Bart. CLICK!!!

I love the link with the dress and the tights on the lady above. It creates a nice subtle link- I prefer the abnormal shapes the tights create. But I think that the balloons are an interesting way to display a garment in the video?

Video examples/ experimenting with video camera to get a feel of the idea that I want to do......

I tried to do a bit of editing on this one...

Here is all of the footage that I took, I was mainly experimenting with angles and shots, it is not very proffesional but that is why I have decided to change my outcome to a photoshoot
I am not very excited by this concept and medium anymore and I have a really strong admiration for beautiful imagery and I think that images are stronger in terms of remembering them and portraying an image than video is.

Any way here is the other uneditied footage (ignore the audio! also the start is the same as the first one but wait untill that bit is ended to watch the footage...)

Story boarding ideas for my video
(Sorry the images are a bit hard to read- click on them to see them bigger and clearer!)

Okay so this one is basically just some ideas of the video if I choose to do the one which will be a collection of random images to portray a sense and ideology of distance.

This one is the same idea as the above also...

Then here is the box idea which I think I really like, it also ties in better with my images and "organised clutter" so hopefully it will come more naturally to me, it's really hard to make a decision because I have the images of what they will look like in my head and I love them both! Yeah anyways heres some images of the box ideas....

Whilst researching on Me Design Mag I stumbled across Jody Rogac an English photographer who now lives in New York, her collection of photos are gorgeous. Although it doesn't completely flow and link with my chosen theme but the reason why I have put her on her is because of her ideologies, she explores human nature, and people as they are. Something that appeals to me as I am fascinated by natural photos where they capture the person in them in their own way, no poses or props etc, just them, allowing the picture to speak for itself. Her images have and ethereal/ vintage feel whilst others are quite spare and contemporary. Her blog contains more gorgeous images but here are a few I selected. Click HERE to visit her blog, and HERE to visit the Me Design Mag article on her. You can visit her website through her blog by clicking on her name at the top left corner. Worth a look in my opinion.

I thought I would clarify what my outcome will be about, now that I actually know! Okay so basically how I got there is pretty vague but it does link! I want to create a fashion film which is controversial and causes a stir with its content/ hidden messages. Similar to graffiti artists, most of them "get up" which involves getting up in the middle of the night, illustrating the streets and then leaving them to be noticed. I prefer street illustrators, "getting up" is normally done by "taggers" which in my opinion is pretty crap. Okay so how I got there, street artists and the whole sort of idea of graffiti is exciting, maybe because its illegal? I don't know but it causes a stir. And this is what I aim to do. I want to include some illustrations in my video too. Panning camera shots of scenic venues, my walls covered in imagery, poses of models dressed in clothing that will help emphasize my idea. I need to think a bit more about the clothes. So yeah basically thats that. It is pretty vague but I'm really excited and pleased that finally things are on a roll...

Some more videos found that have inspired me...

This video is really good, I like the distorted use of imagery at the start and throughout. The use of text is also a key point that stood out to me as well as the use of the random "visual samples" taken from other videos. I love this affect in videos as I think it is definately communicating the same ideas that I have when I scatter images everywhere, it is just a collection that seem to fit together perfectly even though they are so random. The styling is really good and I love the way he has his back to the camera quite alot. Love this video.

This video I liked because of the constant movement of the camera. I'm not sure why but I think it was a good factor. I also love the saturation of the colour- definately something I am going to use in my video, it gives the content such an edge and creates an ambience already without the need for much detail/ sound. Like seen in the images of the results on google I found for "desolate". The end shot is really key to me aswell, I like the way it ends up of just him, it is a really powerful image. I'd like to know what the hell he is going on about though!

And finally I really like this video not just because I like the song but the use of the text in the background and the colour scheme. The camera angles are really brilliant, I think this is something that I am going to keep in mind for the models poses, like the image below where the camera cuts off part of his face- having parts of the body cut out/ face etc makes the idea of distance and absence stronger. Maybe if I have a narrator I could use a similar way of filming him, as opposed to the usual inly audio clips used of narrators, I may include mine, I like the idea of just showing a mouth or maybe their eyes, or hands would be a good one- people normally talk with their hands. Definaltey like this idea...!

All of these videos are directed by Gustav Johansson.

21

Some notes from idea searching, thought I'd put them up so you could get an idea of thought processes etc... (make it full screen to read clearer)

20

I've got a bit of a mental block now maybe it's because I'm starrrrving. I typed in "Desolate" to Google images. Some are pretty good and I can imaging a few shots of them perhaps? I want to focus on having objects too though, it will be quite affective if I have the same background with different images and different soundtracks- but I do think that this is too similar to the Johansson's MTV art break... I think I'll just incorporate elements into this. I want to include text too, I have an image of cardboard lettering growing out of something? Maybe the ground/ tap??? I also think a narrator will be good too. Okay back to the point now here are the images...

There is something really eary (spelling!?) about these pictures that makes me shiver a bit. Maybe its the saturation on them or just the sheer fact that they are so alone and so empty it is triggering an emotion/ feeling in my mind or an inner insecurity that I really don't like being alone?! This is the kind of thing that I would like to portray, it might be difficult to create something so thought provoking which is based on fashion in such a short space of time but I want to go down that direction...

I should have done fine art!

Levi's
"Dangerous Liasons"

I love the cinematography in this advert. Directed by Caroline Pay, I'm not too sure about the sountrack, it fits really well with the video, however I am more focusing on the cinematography side to this. I love the way she looks quite distant and alone in the beggining, then the mood drastically changes as the door rings. The idea of them finding the perfect match when they get to the bottom of each outfit to find each others skin is really nice too. I like the use of the mirrors and the fast paced camera angles- they really help to portray an idea/ ambience and helps the audience relate to her. Mirrors are something that I should keep in mind- the shots of the girl on her own at the beginning are the same ideas that I have in mind for my poses (as I won't be using still photos but I will be recording her standing still) I really like the surroundings too.

18

This video "Brain Fuck" created by Katie Macgregor depicts exactly what I mean by portraying an ideology/ concept through using a collection of random video footage and sound, the montage perfectly puts the viewer in an awkward place (the title of the video is pretty accurate to be honest.) without the need for narration. I want to achieve this in my video through poses and camera angles, I am still debating having narration or text. Maybe I could use both..? See more work by Katie HERE!

17

Shouldn't research come first?! Oh well here goes... Gonna research the following, other art directors, to see other videos etc, I want to look at shock tactics, to hopefully get some inspiration on how to shock?! If that makes any sense, I remember in my tutorial Izzie was talking about shock tactics and I said about the two girls in the film "The Shining" (see video below but maybe you shouldn't look if you are easily scared)

Self explanatory really..! But yeah I want to create some sort of controversy in the fashion industry. Maybe not at this extreme level but I wanted to give an example of shock tactics. So I think this film will do so.
I want to look into abnormality, maybe this could involve disabilities/ or just aesthetical abnormality. I think of the film Saw when I think of this- inspiration from bo130 could be leading me down a really f***ed up route?! But I mean perhaps through the awkward poses that the victims in the movie are held. An idea of this could be portrayed in the models poses. Awkwardness or maybe a sense of distance. Like when you speak to someone who is in their own world. Their expression of distance and being in another world- or when someone who is on drugs, when you are around them, it makes you feel uncomfortable and makes you wonder what is going on in their head, but also can be really disturbing for people around them. Their actions are very abnormal. Perhaps I could take inspiration from this for some poses/ sound affects.

16

Okay so I have finally come up with my outcome- a short fashion film based strongly on the ideologies and thought processes that people have. Using a variety of images to capture moods/ styles/ hobbies and such like that affect people in different way- I want to create an ambience using sound to portray a contrasting ideology which will confuse audiences. My inspiration came from the video by art director Gustav Johansson. His short film titled "THINK BEFORE YOU CONSUME" which is an art break for MTV unfortuneatly I cannot get a copy of the video to embed on here, the link is HERE to his website and it is the image with the cup of coffee...
I want to create a video which incorporates sound which will be the key but I want to include cinematography like the one in the Volkswagon Night Drive advert, you can see in my previous blog click HERE! I'm thinking of having a big wall of sketches/ imagery and mixing this with video clips and footage. Voice recordings and music clips. I want to create something that will make people inspired and make people want to watch it and want to show other people and want to post a link to it on their facebook wall and so on. Something that would mess with their minds, I'm thinking of having hidden messages, subliminal imagery, maybe creating something dark and twisted to this fashion film. I need to think of how to incorporate a model. perhaps have shots of her wearing strange clothes, in demented poses/ expressions are confused/ using close ups on garments/ her features to accentuate the abnormality of the situation. I feel really inspired by bo130 and how he has subliminally put in messages onto his website eg "burn, trees" and "skin up" which you can see in the images here;

I am really drawn to the idea of creating something more sinister and abnormal. Maybe I could focus on the abnormal thoughts that people have??? Another thought just entered my mind!- the drawings by illustrators and graffiti artists are really strange, some are extremely wierd if you look at them properly- I think this is what draws me to them. I love the ideology of shock tactics, controversy, abnormality and expressing yourself, but making it look "cool" if that makes any sense? Oh my gosh, I think I've found my philosophy!!!

My drawing:
(It is mirrored because I have to use Photobooth to take pictures now, my camera broke...)

Egon Schiele. I really like this picture I did of the legs. I love the way it just stops at the shoulders. Something beautiful about it, not so sure what. Thats my problem, I never know why I like something. Well usually its more love than like! Anyway back to Schiele. His illustrations are lush. I love the textures and the scratchy style of the outline. Rich colours and not always having the whole body the same colour- eg the legs on the illustration of the naked woman are completely different colour from the rest of the body, it creates a shadow, but I like to think of it as the way he likes to colour because I think it works really well. They are really beautiful, I think it would look lovely as an embroidery peice.

I thought I'd include some favourite songs as well, after all inspiration comes from everywhere. I will add to this as I have far too many... and I can't be bothered to trapse through the massive 339 or however many songs there are in my "Favourite Songs" playlist...

Aretha Franklin- Since You've Been Gone

Fat Freddies Drop- Hope

Not sure if you remember post 9 (click HERE) talking about Bo130, one of my favourite street illustrators. His images are fantastic and his website is really cool. HERE is another link if you didn't see it before. And I've put up some screen grabs from it and also some pictures of his work. See if you can tell which is which- I think the reason I love his website so much is because it is like a giant piece of work, you scroll around it all, I also love how the images and text and everything overlaps, bits are covered etc... Not sure how to describe it, I wish I could plug headphones into my brain so people could understand me and I wouldn't have to have awkward conversations. You would just know, it would need a mute button at times though. Dragons Den here I come.
